However, this young man from Guéret overcame many obstacles to finally take on the directorship of one of the most (...)

The Creuse on Foot

Be a good sport!

The 2008 topographical guide “La Creuse à Pied” (The Creuse on Foot) has just been issued. This guide, produced by the French Hiking Federation, has 50 walks and treks leading to a discovery of Creuse paths.

The first edition was produced in 2005, in partnership with the Creuse Tourist Board and the Pays Creusois CPIE and the financial support of the Conseil Général de la Creuse (Creuse County Council) and the State.

Marked circuits, walks classified by levels of difficulty, colour IGN maps, indispensable practical information, texts and numerous photographs make this guide an invitation to discover the most beautiful tourist sites in the Creuse département.

In effect, beyond these itineraries, it could be a tool for promoting and enhancing on a national level, the landscapes painted by the impressionist painters of the Creuse Valley, the Creuse stonemasons and right up to the Aubusson weavers.

The Creuse is now known as a great walking spot in France.

A faithful clientele travel to flagship events such as the Enjambée Creusoise which takes place every year 11 May in Bourganeuf.

This year is the 6th edition of this grand gathering of walkers (more than 1000 participants in 2007), from all over Europe to pace a choice of 5 circuits of 5, 10, 15, 25 and 45km.

Lovers of walks in the open countryside, let yourself be guided along the Creuse trails!

La Creuse à Pied on sale in bookshops, Tourist Offices and tourist information centres, IGN points for 13.20€.

Creuse Flavours

Delicacies

Limousin oxtail crumble with ceps and hazelnuts with its seasonal vegetable puree – is this the new Creuse speciality?
Well, it’s certainly Pierre Rullière’s speciality, which allowed him to win a prize organised by the départemental Chamber of Commerce and Industry. And this chef, who with his wife has run the Le Coq d’Or restaurant in Chénérailles since 1991, “isn’t against anything that can promote the Creuse†.

Certain people fell into a cauldron of magic potion when they were small. For Maurice Masvignier it was the call of the big top that he heard when he was young.
In 1943, he was 10, and with cardboard and wood he built his first big top and caravans with which he and his friends at the time, would play in the Church Square in La Souterraine.
An innate love of the circus. He can’t explain where his inspiration comes from. Obviously travelling artists that stopped in the small village and (...)

Discovering the landscapes of the impressionists

On the path of the impressionists

Imagine while staying in the Creuse, you discover you have a real artistic talent. “Understanding a painting, is like literature, you need elements to tackle it,” explains Christophe Rameix, an expert in paintings.
And rightly so, Creuse landscapes, those of Crozant and the Creuse Valley, have served as models for numerous painters. While walking beside the confluence at Fresselines, you can put yourself in Claude Monet’s footsteps and find where he put up his easel in 1889.
Crozant’s (...)

Parks and gardens

Certain people collect stamps or coins, whereas Philippe Wanty is passionate about nature and it’s… trees that are in his collection.
Thirty years ago, he decided to develop this rather invasive past time near the River Sedelle in following a principle: “ I love trees so, I’m going to grow them”.
For several years now, along with his wife Nell and members of the Jardins de la Sédelle Association, this landscaper decided to share his passion with the public.

Aubusson Tapestry

“Shake the dust off Aubusson tapestry”. This is the objective fixed by a Lucas Pinton, fifth generation director of the Pinton workshops in Felletin.
However, shaking off dust that is more than five centuries old isn’t an easy thing! In order to do this, two routes have been explored in this 140-year-old manufactory at first installed in Aubusson and then, Felletin.
Historical workshop and modern technique
Here, in the workshop weavers lean over their tapestries that they patiently and (...)

When you enter into a village or town for the first time, what is the first place that you feel attracted to? For the painter Gabriel Chabrat, the answer seems obvious: the church.
Why? He doesn’t know how to explain, even if it results from the irrational rather than the religious. †We’re naturally attracted by strong places and sometimes that’s where the church is situated†. At the architectural level, what calls to us is the possibility of guessing what’s inside just by observing the (...)

Fed by the Creuse countryside, a class of squash and a jam sandwich, you’ll be ready to be to eat up the miles.
“Show that in the Creuse one can live, live well and above all be happy to live†. This is the main message that Isabelle Bonnat and her husband Jean-François wish to share with you and your family while visiting their farm Ballotier in Reterre. And to help them, nature has put on its best clothes: the trees and bushes are wearing fruit; the fields have flowers and the sheep… are in (...)

If you want to meet Claude Royère, nothing’s simpler. All you need is a pair of walking shoes and then follow one of the numerous Creuse trails – no matter the weather.
Claude Royère’s passionate enough that, well equipped, he’ll carry out his activity in full sun, in rain or snow, at dawn or even at night. For him, each season has its own particular charm. The activity area at Courtille has been, for nearly 10 years, Thierry Di-Castera and his mates’ giant summer playground. But it’s open to anyone whether they be a sports leader like him, lifeguard or members of an association.
